On June 10, 2025, Pittsburgh City Council voted unanimously in favor of an ordinance that will expand upon the existing Paid Sick Days Act. The current law, which became effective in March 2020, requires employers within the City of Pittsburgh with at least 15 employees to provide each with no less than 5 days/40 hours of paid sick leave per year, while employers with fewer than 15 employees must provide each with at least 3 days/24 hours of paid sick leave. Under the new law, which will become effective January 1, 2026, employees of larger employers now will be entitled to at least 9 days/72 hours of paid sick leave per year, while those working for smaller employers will be entitled to at least 6 days/48 hours of paid sick leave annually. Employees will accrue 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours of work time, instead of 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 35 hours worked, as is the case under the current law. Employers may provide more paid sick leave than is required by the ordinance if they choose and some employees who are represented by unions may already be entitled to greater benefits under their respective collective bargaining agreements.
